CHaPteR nineteen

This is one hell of a car,” Sara sighed, reverently running a

finger along the side of the sleek Lamborghini. “Somehow

I don’t think it qualifies as anyone’s idea of inconspicuous, but it’s a

really, really nice car.”

“I like it,” Hunter replied, but her voice held an edge of

unanticipated anger, and a frown creased her forehead as she held

the door open for Sara.

Hunter’s tone sent a chill creeping across Sara’s skin, and her

concern increased as she glanced over. Something had obviously

happened during the twenty minutes between the end of their

meeting and the time Hunter reappeared by the elevator. It was also

readily apparent to Sara that whatever transpired had triggered the

anger that had been on simmer all afternoon, so it now bubbled

dangerously close to the surface.

“Do you still want to do this?”

“Yes.” Hunter slowly let out a breath of air and didn’t say

anything else.

Once she was ensconced in the butter-soft leather seats, Sara

leaned back and tried to relax. She watched as Hunter dropped

into the driver’s seat beside her, and seconds later, the powerful

engine roared to life. A blip on the throttle yielded instantaneous

acceleration, and the security guard manning the booth had to

scramble to raise the gate. Sara saw him give a thumbs-up and heard

him laugh with delight over the roar of the engine. Hunter gave him

a cheeky salute in return before turning out of the parking lot and

onto the busy street. A black SUV followed at a discreet distance.

“Brat,” Sara said, admiring the smooth way Hunter handled

the powerful car, downshifting and merging into traffic with a

combination of ease and a requisite amount of aggression.

As she drove, Hunter glanced over periodically, her eyes

intense and serious. Tilting her chin, Sara met Hunter’s gaze the

next time she looked over and felt something almost tangible pass

between them.

Well, at least that answers one question, Sara decided,

noting the look on Hunter’s face and the corresponding heat that

immediately radiated through her body in response. The seemingly

mutual interest and attraction she had felt the previous evening was

definitely alive and well, regardless of how the night had ended.

Turning her face, she looked out the passenger window

and found herself staring at a reflection of the Lamborghini

as they drove past a gleaming storefront. The reflection raised

another question that needed to be answered. Sara frowned and

contemplated broaching what would undoubtedly be a contentious

subject. With all the security concerns circling in her head, the

question begged to be asked. Even so, she silently waited for what

she hoped was an appropriate length of time before venturing into

turbulent waters.

“Has it occurred to you driving this car is a bit like having a

matador wave a red cape in front of an already angry bull?”

Hunter felt the surprising slash of hurt and struggled to hide

it behind a blank mask. The car was an argument she’d already

endured twice. Once with Matt and again with Peter. And while she

appreciated their concern, she was tired of defending her choices and

felt frustration bubble to the surface. Shifting gears, she responded

with an immediate, hard burst of acceleration, the roar of the engine

coinciding with the surge of resentment rising from her core.
